The Realities of Locum Work for ACEM Trainees

Locum shifts offer exposure to new systems and presentations that strengthen your clinical judgment.

Locum experience helps you see how different departments function, develop adaptability, and gain the independence that defines effective emergency physicians.

  • Tertiary hospitals: teaching-based departments with structured training and exposure to complex trauma and critical care.
  • Regional hospitals: greater procedural autonomy, strong teamwork, and high patient variety.

  • Rural EDs: smaller teams, broader responsibility, and direct consultant oversight — ideal for confidence-building before fellowship.

Is This You?

Even the most ambitious Emergency Medicine doctors can hit a crossroads.

FAQs for ACEM Trainees

Most frequent questions and answers

You’ll need AHPRA registration, recent ED work history, and current ALS2 certification. APLS or EMST/REST training is often preferred for rural placements.

Rates vary by location and hospital size. Most ACEM trainee locums can earn upward of $2000 per shift with travel, accommodation and car covered.

Yes. All hospitals credential trainees under defined supervision — either on-site or via 24-hour consultant (FACEM or SMO) support. You’ll never be rostered beyond your approved scope of practice.

Some placements are in ACEM-accredited sites and may contribute to logbook hours. Others, while non-accredited, still build relevant experience and procedural confidence. I’ll clarify this with each opportunity.

Yes, you will need to be credentialed in every hospital and for every state you work in. This is a legal requirement, but once your credentialing is on file, I can assist with further credentialing in other hospitals across the country.  Hospitals in the same states have very similar requirements, and we can often use the same credentialing and hospital forms etc.

Very high. Regional and rural hospitals in Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory consistently seek capable ACEM trainees for both short and extended blocks.

This depends on your availability.  Placements can range from 1–2 week blocks upwards to multi-month rotations. Many doctors use locums to bridge term gaps or gain additional procedural exposure.

It starts with a conversation. I’ll walk through your clinical preferences, family needs, credentialing status, and ideal locations. Then, only present options that genuinely suit you, not just roles that need filling.

It all depends on you and how fast you can be available and how fast you can organise your credentialing requirements.  I can send you a list of what is required and most doctors already have most of it on their laptop or a USB stick.
