The 820 bed hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area, and has the busiest emergency department in the state.

The department is accredited with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine for both adult and paediatric emergency medicine training. Within the larger Emergency Network we provide a number of comprehensive medical and nursing training and transition programs.

The John Hunter Emergency Department has a multidisciplinary team, including expert medical, nursing, allied health, administrative and support staff.​
